Ways to Keep Your Pets Cool During the Summer
Share
For our pets, heat can go from uncomfortable to dangerous faster than most people realize. Heatstroke can set in quickly on a hot day.
Warning Signs of Overheating
- Dogs: excessive panting, drooling, red or pale gums, lethargy, vomiting
- Cats: rapid breathing, drooling, sweaty paws, restlessness, stumbling
- If your pet collapses — get them cool and call your vet immediately
Fresh Water, Always
- Add ice cubes to keep water cool longer
- Multiple water stations around the house and yard
- Bring water on every walk, no matter how short
Timing Is Everything
Avoid walks during peak heat (10 AM–4 PM). If you can't hold your hand on the pavement for 5 seconds, it's too hot for paws.
Create Cool Zones
- Keep fans or AC running where your pet spends time
- Provide shade outdoors — never leave a pet in direct sun with no escape
- Cooling mats and elevated beds allow airflow
Frozen Treats
- Freeze low-sodium chicken broth in ice cube trays for dogs
- Freeze seedless watermelon chunks — hydrating and pet-safe
- For cats: frozen tuna water cubes or chilled wet food
Never Leave Pets in a Parked Car
Even on a mild day, a parked car reaches dangerous temperatures within minutes. There is no safe amount of time.
